You can do the same using a rich text field and doc links in Notes. I have created a configurable multiple db search application based on some code I found on the net.
As long as all databases are indexed, it searches through the indexes, and builds a document that contains doc links to matching documents, these links are split by database.

You will need to do some customisation but it should be easy...
